Water Operations Interns JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Salary Range:  $18.00 - $22.00 hourly

Scotts Valley Water District is looking for a Water Operations Intern. In a training capacity and under direct supervision this individual performs routine and semi-skilled maintenance tasks while learning a broad range of duties in the operations, maintenance and repair of the District’s water system.

Typical Duties:

Read and install water meters and related equipment; complete associated record keeping; report unusual circumstances or incidents to the appropriate employee; prepare and complete work orders.

Perform physical labor including manual digging using a shovel and bar; loading and unloading materials, supplies, and equipment at the job site and/or in the yard.

Inspect, test, and repair a variety of water facilities and appurtenances; and perform other related work as assigned and/or required.

When assigned to work with operations field staff, perform a variety of construction, maintenance, and operations activities. Assist in preparing the work site and ensuring that materials and tools are available as needed, observe proper safety precautions; maintain tools, supplies, equipment, and the work site in a safe condition.

Learn to safely operate a variety of equipment including other hand, hydraulic, power tools and equipment common to pipeline work.

Knowledge and Abilities: The candidate needs to understand basic mechanical principals, operation of hand and power tools, basic math calculations, general record keeping and safe work practices.  The ability to follow oral and written directions, work cooperatively and communicate effectively in a crew environment, deal tactfully and courteously with the public is also important.

Education and Experience: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

License or Certification: Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and a safe driving record.  A Water Distribution Operator (D-1) Certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board is desirable.

Other Requirements: Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, must have physical stamina to walk up to eight miles daily, sufficient strength to lift meter lids and other items up to 50 pounds without assistance.
