Scotts Valley Water District - Newsletter: Hot tips for a water-efficient summer
Newsletter: Hot tips for a water-efficient summer

Summer temperatures are here and so are water-saving tips from the Scotts Valley Water District. Water efficiency is a year-round activity that everyone can do with a few extra minutes. Here are three tips to save water and money this summer:

  • Watering times: The best times to water your garden is in the early morning or in the evenings. These specific times ensure the water sinks into the soil instead of evaporating into the air during the hotter times of the day.
  • Leak check: By spending a few minutes checking for leaks in toilets, bathrooms, faucets and outdoor fixtures, residents can proactively catch leaks and save hundreds of gallons of water each year. This also translates to less water used and potential savings off the monthly water bill.
  • Shower bucket: Bring a bucket into the shower to collect the water while it warms up. Two minutes of letting the water warm up in your shower means 3-5 gallons of water down the drain. This water can be used in the garden, to wash your car or to fill up the water dish for your pets.
