Press Release: Scotts valley water district declares stage 1 water supply condition, focuses on water use efficiency

Residents reminded to limit irrigation to twice a week, efficiency measures encouraged at restaurants and hotels

(June 24, 2025) SCOTTS VALLEY, CA — The Scotts Valley Water District today announced it has entered a Stage 1 Water Supply Condition, following an annual assessment of rainfall, groundwater conditions and overall water supply.

Although recent wet years helped replenish local groundwater supplies, rainfall for the most recent “water year” totaled 24.6 inches, just 60% of the District’s historical average. This falls below the 80% threshold that triggers a Stage 1 response under the District’s Water Shortage Contingency Plan.

The Santa Margarita Groundwater Basin, which supplies water to the District, is currently stable. Groundwater pumping remains below long-term stress levels, thanks in part to water use efficiency efforts and reduced water use by residents and businesses. However, climate uncertainty and long-term water demand require ongoing vigilance.

While there are no mandatory water use reductions at this time, the District is encouraging voluntary water efficiency through public outreach, rebates and practical efficiency tips. Key water efficiency actions during Stage 1 include:

  • Stay Informed with WaterSmart Alerts — Sign up (or log in) to WaterSmart, a free online platform, to receive custom reminders about allowed irrigation days and times, plus alerts about upcoming restrictions or changes.
  • Limit Outdoor Watering to Two Days a Week — Choose early morning or late evening hours to avoid water loss. Every drop counts!
  • Utilize Water-Saving Resources — Find seasonal gardening tips and rebate information for home and yard on the District’s website and social media.
  • Turf’s Up!— Got grass that doesn’t get used? Learn how you can transform your lawn into a drought-tolerant landscape—and get help with rebates or financing.
  • Report Water Waste —If you spot leaks, runoff or watering during restricted hours, contact the District.

The District continues to monitor conditions closely and is committed to ensuring a reliable water supply now and into the future. Continued efficient use of water helps protect this valuable resource.
